The Screen Our Kids initiative and the free resources available on are provided by The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of Technology. The Scott Center for Autism Treatment is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization that serves children and families affected by autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and provides a full range of evaluation and services, from diagnosis to treatment.

Parents and children from around the world travel to The Scott Center for the most advanced treatments available. The Scott Center ranks among the best in the world for its research contributions to the field of behavior analysis. Many decades of research have validated treatments based on applied behavior analysis (ABA).

ABA therapy is a notable treatment approach for people with an ASD diagnosis. ABA has become widely accepted among health care professionals and used in many schools and treatment clinics. ABA encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative behaviors in order to improve a variety of skills. The child’s progress is tracked and measured continuously

ABA methods are used to support persons with autism in at least six ways:

  • to increase behaviors (e.g. reinforcement procedures increase on-task behaviors or social interactions)
  • to teach new skills (e.g. systematic instruction and reinforcement procedures teach functional life skills, communication skills, or social skills)
  • to maintain behaviors (e.g. teaching self-control and self-monitoring procedures to maintain and generalize job-related social skills)
  • to generalize or to transfer behavior from one situation or response to another (e.g. from completing assignments in the resource room to performing as well in the mainstream classroom)
  • to reduce interfering behaviors (e.g. self-injury or stereotypy)
